stressoil
Biostimulant to mitigate the oxidative damage
caused by the use of mineral oils.
Characteristics
stressoil is a plant biostimulant that reduces leaf fall when mineral oils are applied at times of high temperatures.
The agricultural biostimulant stressoil helps to prevent the plant’s metabolic activity from dropping at key moments that determine the final quality of the fruit and production.
It is advisable that at high temperatures, above 30°C, the mineral oil treatment should be discontinued. However, in the summer months and at application times, this condition is difficult to achieve. Mineral oils create a greasy film on the plant surface, preventing it from transpiring. This action, in combination with high temperatures, causes an increase in vapour tension, leading to the production of highly reactive free radicals which cause irreversible damage at the cellular level (stomata ostioles), causing consequent burning, drying out, defoliation, etc.
The two essential factors for the initiation of oxidation of mineral oils are the presence of oxygen and an increase in temperature.
Free radicals are highly reactive chemical species, so they interact rapidly with the substances around them, degrading them. The result of this degradation is the tissue burns we see (cell necrosis).
Antioxidants are substances capable of neutralising the action of free radicals. This is why it is very advisable to apply the biostimulant stressoil together with mineral oils to prevent the oxidative and destructive action of these free radicals from the outset.
Due to its special formulation, this stressoil crop biostimulant protects the fatty acids in the oil from oxidation by atmospheric oxygen and high temperatures.
Other benefits
It is well known that the application of mineral oils has a negative effect on the growth of the fruit, as it can temporarily paralyse its development and even stress it (accumulation of sodium Na+ ions).
This is why applications of stressoil help the fruit not to stop its growth, both through the action of the anti-stress agents it incorporates and the potassium, which optimises the functioning of the Na+/K+ pump that plays a very important role in the maintenance of cell volume and turgor, attenuating the stress on the fruit.
